An isolated, abandoned industrial site in Cornwall, England, a region long scarred by mines and slag heaps, has been reclaimed; the former clay pit is now a virtual garden of Eden. Showcasing 4,500 plant species, the Eden Project is designed to increase public awareness of our dependence on plants, support research and conservation projects around the world, and provide a vision for a sustainable future. The grounds within the nearly 200-foot deep (60 meter) former clay pit cover 37 acres (15 hectares] and are interlaced with pathways, herb and flower gardens, planted terraces, trees, and experimental crops.

Taroko Gorge in eastern Taiwan is the most popular tourist attraction in the country: a spectacular 12-mile-long ravine of sheer cliff faces, white-water rivers and stunning waterfalls that remind one of a Lord of the Rings wonderland.

The Taroko Gorge is composed mainly of marble and granite. The name, Taroko, means the “magnificent and splendid” in the language of Truku, the aboriginal tribe who resides in the area.

The most phenomenal aspect of the park is the amazing relief. In a single afternoon you can travel from rugged coastal cliffs through a maze of subtropical forested canyons to high elevation subalpine coniferous forests.

In about 20 kilometers the landscape rises from sea level to some of the tallest peaks in Taiwan at over 3800 meters. Thats steep!

A few images from Taroko Gorge Taiwan
